Artsmark
Heathwood Lower School was awarded Artsmark Silver in 2008. Artsmark is a national awards scheme that recognises schools with a high level of provision in the arts - this includes art and design, dance, drama and music.
By gaining an Artsmark, the school has demonstrated its commitment to the wider development of young people and teachers and to raising the profile of the arts in the school and local community
Activemark
Heathwood Lower School was awarded Activemark in 2007 and 2008 in recognition of our commitment to keeping our pupils fit and active. All classes have at least 2 hours of P.E lessons each week. Children in years 3 and 4 have swimming lessons at Tiddenfoot Leisure Centre.
We also have many after- school sports clubs. They include over the year:
- Football
- Tag Rugby
- Uni-hoc
- Athletics
- Gymnastics
- Multi – Skills
- Dance
- Netball
Our midday supervisors also run a ‘Huff and Puff’ club during the lunchtime break.
International Schools Award
Heathwood Lower School was awarded the full International Schools Award in July 2007. The DCSF International School Award is an accreditation scheme for curriculum-based international work in schools.
The ISA encourages and supports schools to develop the following:
- An international ethos embedded throughout the school
- A majority of pupils within the school impacted by and involved in international work
- Collaborative curriculum-based work with a number of partner schools
- Curriculum-based work across a range of subjects
- Year round international activity
- Involvement of partner schools and the wider community in the UK
We are participating in the British Council Programme – Connecting Classrooms and through this have developed Links with Schools in Ghana and South Africa and have also been recognised as a ‘ FairTrade School.
Healthy Schools
The National Healthy Schools Programme ensures a range of outcomes in respect of improvement in health and reduced health inequalities; raised pupil achievement; greater social inclusion and increased working between health promotion providers and education establishments.
