Heathwood Lower School

Heathwood Lower School

SPRING TERM,  2010

TAG RUGBY

This year's Lower Schools' Tag Rugby Tournament has been rescheduled for Thursday, 18th March at Leighton Buzzard Rugby Club, from 1:30 to 4:00.  Parents are welcome to come along and watch.  Heathwood has entered 2 teams, one from Year 3 and one from Year 4 both of whom have had some practice over the last few weeks to sharpen their skills!

Please ensure that children participating in the tournament are suitably equipped as the last two events have taken place in extremely cold conditions and this year's looks no different!

 GYMNASTICS

The children excelled themselves at the Gymnastics Festival on the 2nd February with the Year 1s and 2s scoring a magnificent 9.2 out of 10 to take first place!  Years 3 and 4 were beaten into second place by 0.3 of a point by a very well drilled Hockcliffe team.  The children can be justifiably proud of their achievements as they have all worked very hard over the last few weeks and performed to the top of their ability on the day.  They were presented with their certificates on the following Friday, in our Celebration Assembly.

With our after-school gymnastics club over for this year, may I take the opportunity to thank Mrs Hill for her help and support in helping to train and prepare the children for the event.

 DANCE

The Dance Club has started again for the Spring term and I'm glad to see it has a number of new recruits, including some from Year 2.  The club is run by a 6th form student from Van Dyke who is an accomplished dancer herself and definitely keeps the children on their toes!   If anyone else is interested in taking part then please come along and see me and I will give them the necessary forms.

MARATHON CLUB

As part of Sport Relief 2010, a number of children in Years 3 and 4 have elected to take part in a lunchtime Marathon Club.  Having started in January, the children are being encouraged to walk/skip/run/play around a measured 145m course on the school field.  Their progress is being monitored and they receive rewards when they have reached specific distances.  The aim is to have achieved a distance of 25 miles by the middle of March.  Then, on Friday 19th March, those children that have reached the goal will be taken to Cedars Upper School to complete their final mile with other children from around Leighton Buzzard.

It will be a real commitment to the children as it will mean them walking 2 or 3 miles a week in potentially unpleasant weather.  Their task has been made harder as the extreme weather we had at the beginning of January delayed the start.  Our first session was on the 15th January and even that was in cold and snowy conditions!  Nevertheless, apart from the obvious exercise benefits, I hope it will give them a real sense of purpose and an even greater sense of achievement when they have completed the task.  There will be regular updates on the children's progress on the Learning Platform (see the online Sports' Notice Board) and on the Sports' Notice Board in the hall.

MULTISPORTS

A multisports afternoon for Years 3 and 4 has been organised for Tuesday, 16th March at Gilbert Inglefield.  Unfortunately, Year 4 children are out on a school trip that day, but we still have 20 Year 3 children who will take part in Tri Golf, Tag Rugby and Mini Hockey sessions.  Further details will be sent out to the participating children nearer the time.

NETBALL

Netball Club is now up and running for Years 3 (Wednesday) and 4 (Friday).

SPEEDSTACKING

The Speedstacking Club for Year 4 (Tuesday) is also underway.  New members are always welcome.

HOCKEY

The Year 3/4 Unihoc Club has now started and will take place every Wednesday.  There is still time to join if anyone is interested.

MULTISKILLS

A Multiskills Club for Year 2 has started and takes place every Friday.

2008/09

Last year, Heathwood was able to participate in the majority of the events organised by the Leighton-Linslade Sports Partnership.  Every child in KS1 and KS2 was given the opportunity to take part in at least one event during the year and 80% of our children took advantage of that.  Indeed, 15 of our KS2 children took part in 5 or more events during the year!

These activities will continue next year when we will use this page to provide information about upcoming events, and reports and photographs of previous events.  It would be rewarding to see our 80% participation rate increased to nearer 100%, so please encourage your children to have a go!  The multisports and multiskills events, in particular, are formatted to provide coaching in, and a less competitive approach to, a variety of different sports.  Over the year this has included rugby, cricket, golf, athletics, multiskills, tennis and hockey.

Please check out our gallery to see a selection of photographs from some of these activities.
